The Kenya Alliance for Mental Health (KAMH) is on a mission to improve mental healthcare in Kenya

We partner with Universities, Hospitals, Schools, law Enforcement, and Faith Based Organizations to Expand the public’s access to Mental Healthcare.

A shortage of mental healthcare workers:
Kenya faces a severe shortage of mental health professionals. The WHO estimates that there are approx. 120 psychiatrists serving a population of nearly 55 million.
High suicide rates:
Kenya is grappling with high suicide rates. In 2022 Kenya's reported suicide rate was 6.2 per 100,000 people. It is believed that the actual rate may be much higher due to underreporting.
Stigma and discrimination:
Kenyans with mental health issues face significant stigma and discrimination, which can lead to social isolation, reduced quality of life, and a reluctance to seek help.
Adverse effects of chronic health conditions:
The prevalence of chronic health conditions in Kenya has significantly intensified the existing demand for mental health services.

This is our WHY!

Our 2023 Events in Kenya

Imagine a Kenya in which everyone has access to mental healthcare

We are working to break down the barriers to mental healthcare. KAMH envisions a Kenya where accessible, and stigma-free mental health care is available to all citizens, fostering a resilient and thriving society that embraces mental well-being as a cornerstone of health and development.

Peer Counselor Training

KAMH has partnered with Grand Canyon University, in Phoenix Arizona, to develop a professional training program. The Kenyan Mental Health Care Practitioner Certificate Program is designed to create a robust and skilled mental health workforce capable of meeting the diverse mental health needs of the Kenyan population, ultimately improving access to quality care and promoting overall mental well-being to enlarge the mental health workforce in Kenya.

Sector Based Training

We teach practical, clinical, and spiritual skills to help care for the person as a whole: mind, body, and spirit. With increased mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility, our students are better able to adjust to external and internal demands, and as a result, they are more successful in coping with difficult and challenging life experiences. This training not only benefits the individual members of these organizations, but also the community they serve.

Public Health Education and Advocacy

The KAMH public mental health initiative aims to create a more informed, empathetic, and supportive society that recognizes the importance of mental health and is equipped to address mental health challenges collectively.

KAMH Sports Initiative

The KAMH Sports Initiative is introducing programs that are based on the Neurosequential Model, which emphasizes the core concepts of brain function, development, and the impact of developmental adversity. The programs utilize Kenyan cultural activities, such as running, dancing, and drumming, which facilitate regulation through repetitive rhythmic activities.

“Thank you for the talk on Self Care for Teachers. This was meant for me as I sometimes feel extremely overwhelmed between teaching my students and finding balance on helping them with their emotions. We don’t have a school counsellor designated to assist, teachers are not trained on mental health. Please continue helping us and if you have resources for drugs in schools or topics it would be a great webinar. God bless you!”

“Thank you for the insightful talk this evening on self-care for Christian leaders. It was very helpful and practical. I have started to implement the tools you discussed starting with a digital detox and saying no while remaining agile. I would be grateful if you would share the presentation with me. God bless you. I wish you a great day and week ahead!”
